Edison HOME Model B Cylinder Phonograph
Serial number 227703, c 1907
Shown here are some pictures of a very nice Edison HOME model B cylinder phonograph made about 1907. It originally was made to lay only 2 minute cylinders, but with the introduction of the 4 minute cylinder in 1908, the folks at Edison thought it would behoove them to make available a conversion kit that would make the older 2 minute only cylinder phonograph able to play both 2 & 4 minute cylinders. This machine has such a conversion kit installed and it works very smoothly. It also appears that the owners chose to replace the original reproducer carriage with one that would accommodate the larger Diamond 'B' 4 minute reproducer and this carriage mounts the reproducer horizontally which facilitates installation of the vertically mounted Cygnet horn. Pretty cool.

I rebuilt the machine, including completely dismantling the top works and cleaning every little piece. When I got it, it was stuck in 4 minute mode, now it flips smoothly and easily from 2 to 4 to 2 minute mode. I also disassembled the motor and took out the spring and cleaned it. It was in excellent condition, so I reinstalled it after cleaning, then regreased it. I made a few adjustments, put it all back together, and it is now a splendid 2/4 minute cylinder phonograph. It is strong, smooth, and quiet.

It came with a Diamond 'B' reproducer and a Model C reproducer. Both work great! It also came with an original adaptor which allows the Model C reproducer to be installed in the new larger carriage.

I posted several videos to YouTube showing this machine at work. You can view some of them here:
